How to deal with plastic

„Plastic is a brilliant material. But our relationship with it is trash.“ – Maikel Kuijpers

This research project around the „Vernünftiger Pavillon“ demonstrates how focusing on repair culture and resource-efficient production changes material choices. Wherever only size, not precision, matters, wood, a regrowing ressource is used – sufficient for stability and easy to source. Plastic appears only where its specific material properties are essential, all of it recycled using Precious Plastic machines.

The lightweight four-arch structure of the pavillon weighs under 2 kg. Its design follows material logic: starting with sustainable choices and building stability around them. Wooden rods may break, but they can be replaced instantly with standard 1 m rods from any hardware store. Several pavilions can also be connected to expand the structure flexibly.

Industrial design must lead people to conscious consumption instead of consciously forcing them to consume.
