Since my university (University of Applied Arts Vienna) has a renowned institute for fashion design, I luckily had the opportunity to take a pattern-making class.

It’s not like I hadn’t made patterns before. Previously, I would trace garments I already had in my closet to create patterns and then try to eyeball any adjustments. I also upcycled old clothes and did a lot of freestyle work. That was great, but I still wanted to learn sewing in a more professional way and understand the fundamentals from a trained tailor.

Since then, my understanding has improved significantly. I learned how to create basic blocks and more complex base models, including skirts, culottes, trousers, jeans, tops with and without darts, sleeves, collars, details, as well as grading patterns and developing designs with model-specific variations.

With this new professional knowledge, I’m even more motivated to create new made-to-measure pieces.
